Splitting Cards
To split cards, you must have a pair (ex.
2 and 2). If you have a pair that you want to split and your
cards are dealt face down, turn them over and place them a
few inches apart. If your cards were dealt face up, point
to your cards and say "split" when the dealer prompts
you for a card. The original bet
will go with one card and you will have to place an equal
amount of chips in the betting box near the other card.
You are now playing two hands, each as
though they were regular hands with the exception being that
if you have just split two aces. In that case, you only get
one card which will hopefully be a 10. If it is a ten, that
hand's total is now 21 but the hand isn't considered a Blackjack.
Doubling Down
Doubling down is exactly what it sounds
like; it is when you have been dealt a favorable hand, and
wish to double your bet. Let's say that your first two cards
are a 5 and a 6. This is a situation in wish you would often
double down, because the total value of your hand is 11, and
you have a very good chance of landing either a 9, 10 or a
face card, to more than likely win the hand.
The only thing to remember is that you
are only allowed to be dealt one more card after you double
down. So, if the total of your first two cards is 9 and you
double down, and then you receive a 2, you are stuck with
an 11 and must have the dealer bust in order to win the hand.
Some casinos only allow you to double down on a hand value
of 10 and/or 11, so be sure to check the rules.
